GTB Plumbing is owned and operated by Jon Hall, a plumber with life-long plumbing experience. While GTB Plumbing is an in-town Atlanta company, it actually takes its name from Gulf to Bay Plumbing, Jon's Dad's company. Gulf to Bay was a successful, well-loved plumbing company in Sarasota, Florida for 40 years. When Jon's dad retired in 2012, Jon decided to continue family business in his own way, here in Atlanta.
We see GTB Plumbing not just as a family business, but also as an opportunity to honor the original Gulf to Bay and Jon's parents' accomplishments.

Four years ago, I joined a plumbing family and was overwhelmed by all the new plumbing related rules that entered my life.
I knew the basics- no grease down the drain (I did it anyway), no flushing tampons (did that, too), only small stuff down the garbage disposal (will that go if I sort of cut it up a first?)- but I never really understood why I couldn't or shouldn't do those things.
Everyday for the past four years, I've heard the stories of the mistakes people make and the sometimes funny, sometimes horrifying consequences, so I thought I would share some of them with you.

Sadly, it turns out that they really aren't.
Here in Atlanta, the "flushable wipes" are causing sewers to clog and overflow, leaking waste into our rivers.
They're so bad, in fact, that the city of New York is working on a law to require the term "flushable" to be removed from the product, arguing that they not only cause millions of dollars in unnecessary plumbing repairs but they also cost New York over $100 million dollars in clean up fees at water treatment plants.
Many other states have had to invest in expensive grinders just to deal with the wipes.

Jon sometimes gets calls from frantic customers trying to rescue their jewelry from a drain.
My favorite was the amazing woman who dropped her very expensive, newly acquired engagement ring down the bathroom sink.
He told her NOT to run the water, and when he got there, he found the entire sink basin wrapped in a thick layer of painter's tape.
There was absolutely no chance water was going to reach that drain!
He was able to rescue her ring because it got caught in something called the "P" trap.

When you're married to a plumber, you hear all sorts of troubling questions, and a lot of them aren't very pleasant.
Most people visit their friends and discuss politics or sports or hobbies.
Quite often, we end up discussing clogs and leaks and weird noises.
It's fine, we love our friends, but one of them recently asked Jon about little flies living in her drain.
That one blew my mind!
It was something that I didn't even know could happen, but it turns out, there is a little booger that loves it when we clog our drains.
