Local 486 believes that training is the foundation on which any organization is based. We are not only involved with our program but our members also sit on various Vocational committees. Please log in to access the Members Only sections. Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 486 was established in 1995 by the consolidation of Plumbers Local 48 and Steamfitters Local 438. We represent nearly 2,000 union-trained plumbers and steamfitters, and are affiliated with the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

Our members are highly trained craftsmen who fabricate, install and service piping systems. They may be found on jobsites involving single-family homes, garden and high-rise apartment buildings, large and small office buildings, power plants, chemical installations, factories, public buildings and health care facilities.

The jurisdictional area covered by this agreement is the same territorial jurisdiction allocated to the Local Union by the United Association.
The area is bound by a line beginning at the town of Beverly Beach, then in a northwesterly direction through Main Street of Laurel to the intersection with the Montgomery-Frederick county border.
Then along the border southwest to the Potomac River, then northwesterly along the Potomac River to West Virginia-Virginia line.
Then southwesterly along the Jefferson County border, then northwesterly to the Potomac River to the vicinity of Paw Paw, Morgan County, West Virginia.

The Plumbers/Steamfitters Local Union 486 Joint Journeyman and Apprentice Training Facility trains skilled, certified plumber/steamfitter craftsmen.
The five-year program, provided at no cost to qualified applicants, combines intensive technical classroom instruction at the school's state-of-the-art facility with on-the-job training.
As jobs become available, apprentices are placed with participating contractors signatory to an agreement with Plumbers/Steamfitters Local 486.
Applicants must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent or be a graduating senior.
